Chapter 1: About NetStores

What you'll need

There are two ways you can set up an Internet mall or storefront with NetStores:

• Purchase a turnkey system from NetStores, which will be housed and maintained at our facilities. We will assist you in every step of creating your site. You can update your product data by disc or email. We will forward orders and regular activity reports to you by email or fax.

• Set up your own NetStores system. In addition to the NetStores software, you will need the following to set up your own online shopping presence:
  • Web Server: You can use NetStores with almost any Web server that can run CGI programs. Your server should support SSL, so that you can provide secure credit card transactions. (The installation procedure currently supports the NCSA/Apache, Netscape, CERN/IBM, and Spry servers. Contact NetStores if you would like to use NetStores with some other server.)

    If you do not have a Web server that supports SSL, contact NetStores to get the NetStores Secure Server. This server is available for a variety of UNIX platforms (included Linux and FreeBSD). It can be used alone or with NetStores.

  • Internet Access: Your Web server should have a connection to the Internet that is fast enough to handle the volume of business you expect. You'll also need to get an Internet domain name if you don't already have one.
  • Webmaster: This person performs day-to-day housekeeping to maintain your mall or store. This includes updating pages, prices, and product lists, creating activity reports, and routine system maintenance.
  • Merchant credit card account: You'll need to have a bank account that allows you to accept and process credit cards.
