Chapter 2: Installing and Using NetStores

Choosing the store interface

Before you create a storefront, you need to make the following decisions about your storefront:

  1. Decide whether you want to create a storefront to Browse a small catalog (gen-cat) or to Search a large catalog (gen-srch). If you haven't already, read the section on "What the buyer sees" for some background and examples of the different types of store interfaces you can create with NetStores.

The interfaces that let you Order configured products (gen-conf), Retrieve quotes (gen-srcq), and Retrieve orders (gen-srco) can be combined with the gen-srch interface. For an online examples of these interfaces, see http://www.netstores.com/demo/demo.html (use "1" for the account number and "captain" for the password.

  2. Decide on a short abbreviation you will use for this storefront. The abbreviation will be the name of the store's directory and will be used in URLs that run the NetStores programs to generate pages for this store.

After you create the storefront, the NetStores programs /dwos-bin/gen-cat and /dwos-bin/gen-srch netstoresally generate a storefront if you send the store abbreviation as a parameter. For example, if your store abbreviation is "abc", the URL to enter your store will be one of the following:
